The study on the Intertcostal vascular system in Korea

Abstract
The vascular patterns and the variations are very important and interesting facts because the intercostal arteries & veins are resulted through complicated embryologic process.
The vascular patterns of posterior intercostal vessels in 100 Korean infants were observed and the, results were as follows:
I. A. intercostalis suprema was supplied Ist-2nd intercostal spaces in 55 percent, only 1st. intercostal space in 41 percent, and lst-3rd intercostal spaces in 3.5 percent. And the 1st intercostal space was supplied by a branch from thoracic aorta in 0.5 percent.
2. A. Intercostalis suprema which are Supplying lst-2nd intercostal spaces and lst-3rd intercostal, spaces were more frequent on right sides.
3. The common trunks of posterior intercostal arteries were more frequent in right side, (71 in number on right sides of 60 bodies, 52 on left sides of 45 bodies).
4. The appearances of common trunks above 4th posterior intercostal arteries including itself were 46 persent on right side, 34 percent on left, and the frequencies decreased according to descending downwards.
5. In common trunk formation of posterior.intercostal arteries the arteries of upper level arised from those of lower level, excluding 2.6 percent exceptions.
6. V. intercostalis superior sinistra in 14 percent directly, drained to left brachio-cechalic vein, and, through accessory hemiazygos vein in 53 percent.
7. In every case the azygos veins were recognised.
8. The formation of left azygos veins occured in 26 percent.
9. Including left azygos veins, the complete continuation of accessory hemiazygos veins occured in 83 percent and the complete continuation of hemiazygos veins were accounted in 68 percent.
10. The numbers of transverse veins which connect between azygos and left azygos veins were 1-4 and 1 branch cases were accounted in 57.7 percent.
The numbers of transverse veins which connect. between azygos and accessory hemiazygos veins . were 0-4 and 1 branch cases were 47.3 percent, 2 branch cases were accounted in 32.4 percent.
The numbers of transverse veins which connect between azygos and hemiazygos veins were 0-4 and the occurences of frequency were as follows, 1 branch 41.8 percent, 2 branch-,27 percent, 3 branch25.6 percent.
11. The transverse veins connecting between azygos systems of both sides, were more frequent between the, levels of 7th and 9th posterior intercostal veins and were 53. 1 percent of total cases and, decreasedaccording to upwards and downwards from the levels of 7th to 9th posterior intercosterior veins.
12. Generally the variations of posterior intercostal artaries were more frequent in right sides and the variations of posterior intercostal veins were more frequent in left sides.
